Tuesday night was definitely a thermal underwear kinda night. Too bad I didn’t realize that before I went out in my jeans and flats. We headed up to North Chuck where a diverse crowd huddled around campfires and heaters under tents at the Michaux Conservancy in the old Navy Yard. The free event was intended to spread awareness about the Noisette Foundation’s programs that are designed to build social, economic, and environmental capital in the area. A silent auction included pieces from artists like Jonathan Green, and raffle prizes included sweet gift baskets with goodies from local businesses like EVO Pizza and Jivamukti Yoga. A jazz band provided background music, then a trio of young high-schoolers rapped a song they’d written themselves called “End This War.” They powered through technical difficulties and charmed the crowd. And can I say how refreshing it was that this wasn’t another oyster roast? They had plenty of fried fish, hush-puppies, and mac & cheese, plus beer and cocoa, to keep everyone warm and smiling.
